The aim of the project is to raise creative, respectful, understanding and sensitive individuals who make use of nature appropriately and consciously. It is to give students a chance to see what a village life is and what nature does for the living species. These individuals will thereby be aware of nature's importance in life and strive to protect the balance of it by caring, recycling and protecting. We have an ecology house in our school in which the lessons and projects take place. Students bring their ecology bags to the lessons and attend this house showing their ecology passports. Their ecology bags consist of a magnifying glass, tweezers, ruler, pencils and a note book.
The project is a duration of six months starting from the beginning of the second semester to mid June. Many different projects relating to nature have been done. The following is a list of each one with a brief summary.
Tree Planting: Students planted their own trees. Firstly they prepared the earth using shovels and other equipment. They then planted the seeds and watered them regularly. They learned the different tree types by exploring in our schools’ forest, they learned how to calculate the age of the trees and the processes in photosynthesis. They now know how trees provide oxygen and that therefore they have an important role in our lives.
Making compost: Students learned about re-using the materials in nature to make compost from organic materials. They collected leaves, sticks, tree seeds and other materials nature provides and crushed them using the chipping machines and gathered them all in an area. Stirring them from time to time, students gradually made compost which they also used later for their own plants. By the end of this activity students had learnt how to make organic compost which is one thing plants and trees need for survival.
Yoghurt Festival: The aim here was to encourage organic feeding. At the initial stage students classed the animals we raise in our farm in terms of older or younger, female or male. They were taught what each animal eat, how we take care of them and what they provide for us. Then students were taken to the cows and were shown how to milk them. Having a go milking the cows, students took the milk to the ecology house with the help of our schools donkey. Students said that they noticed the milk was warm when it was first milked. The students then made yoghurt and cheese (cokelek) from the milk. By making yoghurt from the milk students observed that good bacteria can cause fermentation. By making cheese (cokelek) they learned that the milk undergoes a chemical change. Some students claimed that they made cheese at home for their mother and some said they didnt use to eat cheese but now they have started. In addition to these, students also gathered eggs from the chicken cages we have in the school and made scrambled egg to eat.
Making pickles: Students planted vegetables, watered them and watched them grow. Being aware of the fact that they raise organic vegetables, they then picked them and consumed them at lunch time. The students also made pickles from vegetables. They washed and chopped the vegetables and then gathered them into a container. Adding water, salt, vinegar and garlic they sealed it and left it aside. After a while it was ready to eat. Each student brought a jar to school filled it with pickles and then took it home to eat.
Little Farmers: Before planting vegetables students learned how to prepare the earth. Using different farm equipment students prepared the earth and planted their seeds which consisted of lettuce, mint, radish, cress and onion. They looked after them and later in the year took them home to eat.
The Garden in The Bottle: Large glass containers were bought for each classroom. Students put coal at the bottom of the glass, then pebbles and then compost soil was added. Although no water was provided the plant inside grew. The aim here was to observe effects of water cycle, photosynthesis and humidity on the plant.
Jam Festival: Every year we hold a Jam festival. Children pick fruit from the school trees and plants and help prepare them for the jam. This year students made orange jam. First they searched for pieces of wood in the forest for the preparation of fire. The woods were gathered and burnt, then the cauldron was put on the fire. After washing the oranges the students chopped the fruit into small pieces and added them into the cauldron with sugar and then each had a go stirring it. The whole school joined the Jam festival. The jam was then put into jars and sold to parents in a fair. The raised money from the fair was sent to LOSEV (a foundation to help fight against leukemia) and also to Ethiopia to support the water well project.
