Taking Action Against PPCPs (2010)
by Jr. PLEWA
Jr. PLEWA, a youth based group, has worked hard to reasearch the effects of PPCPs, educate the public, and support a take-back bill. First we researched everything there is to know about PPCPs. We did this by looksing at newspapers, online research, and talking to scientists and getting their input. Next we put together a slide show that summarized our research. We had to get the word out, so we went to PAEE and got positive feedback. Then we decided how were going to help create a change in the way people dispose of PPCPs. We started conducting general public and pharamacist surveys. The conclusion was that the public didn't know the effects of PPCPs on the waterways and that they would accept a take-back program if one was introduced. The pharmacists also agreed that such a program would be beneficial to the environment. Our group then created a list of recommendation which we took to Harrisburg, and presented to the Northwest Caucus. We recieved a revised version of the bill that contains some of the recommendations that we had presented. The bill is currently going through the final stages and we are very excited. We still continue to get the word out by presenting our information at youth training days and other events such as symposiums. Last fall we even presented at the NAAEE.
Our project library is full of very interesting information, so please feel free to check that out. Our video link is among the documents.
