Puppets with a Green Mission (2011)
by Magali
The project Puppets with a green mission has nine countries participating: Iceland, Belgium, the Netherlands, Spain, Portugal, Slovenia, Romania, Lithuania and Turkey. Together we want to make our children more aware of our nature and how it is supposed to be treated. Our idea is to increase our knowledge by teaching each other and exchanging informations about environmental topics. The more we know about our nature the more respect we have for it and by putting our hands and thoughts together we can make a difference.
Each school has a puppet to represent their school, country, language and culture. Each puppet brings a suitcase with them that always contains a diary and a passport along with things that they need for their trip.
This project aims to share an experience of environmental education among the participating schools. Each country has chosen an environmental topic to focus on and the puppets travel with an experimental box that represents that topic. The box contains three experiments, a story on that topic, a song related to it and materials to make an artistic activity about the topic. The topics are : waste, water, fauna, energy, flora, fire, air, healthy food and green transport.
All the schools will celebrate national days of environmental issues in their own way and then share with the partners how they celebrated it, that way we can learn a lot about the culture of each other.
After the two years each school has nine experimental boxes about nine environmental topics to own, with all their contents.
This project is like a seed sown in the child’s mind and hopefully it will open the doors to a greener world in the future, in order for green, environment-friendly generations to be raised.
The motivation for this project is that we want to make ourselves and our pupils more aware of their nature and how it should be treated along with making our children more aware of the world that they are living in. We also want our children to realize what Europe is and that its a part of the whole world and consists of many different countries, with different culture and languages.
Children must develop a sense of respect and caring for the natural environment during their first few years of life or be at risk for never developing such attitudes. Environmental education based on life experience should begin during the very earliest years of life. Our pupils are the next generation and ecological problems will be even bigger problems in their future if we do not address it now.
The project "Puppets with a green mission" aims to encourage preschool pupils to become euro-citizens responsible for their environment. Because young children learn about the environment by interacting with it and playing, we choose the best form of ecological education and implementation of this project – through games and using puppets.
The partners meet eachother 3 times a year in one of the countries. When they are together they share information about the topics, about their education system and give an activity in one of the classes.
This project is a Comenius project of two years and is possible to realize thanks the Lifelong Learning Programme of the European Commission.
